Get free software to help you run your small business:   Basecamp turns project management and collaboration on its head. Instead of Gantt charts, fancy graphs, and stats-heavy spreadsheets, Basecamp offers message boards, to-do lists, simple scheduling, collaborative writing, live chat, and file sharing. Hundreds of thousands agree it’s a better way.  Campfire brings simple group chat to the business setting. Conventional instant messaging is great for quick 1-on-1 chats, but it’s miserable for 3 or 4 or 7 or 15+ people at once.  Backpack is the alternative to those confusing, complex, “organize your life in 25 simple steps” personal information managers. Backpack’s simple take on pages, notes, to-dos, and cellphone/email-based reminders is a novel idea in a product category that suffers from status-quo-itis.  Writeboard lets you write, share, revise, and compare text solo or with others. It’s the refreshing alternative to bloated word processors that are overkill for 95% of what you write.  Ta-da List keeps all your to-do lists together and organized online. Keep the lists to yourself or share them with others for easy collaboration. There’s no easier way to get things done. Over 2,000,000 to-do items have been created so far.

Do you Squidoo?

Check out my lens  Check out my Squidoo!

Squidoo was started by the Original Squid, Seth Godin. Nearly ten years ago, Seth founded Yoyodyne, which originated the idea of permission marketing online. After Yoyodyne was acquired by Yahoo, he served as VP Direct Marketing for Yahoo for about a year. In 2000, Godin focused full-time on his career as an acclaimed public speaker, an author and a blogger. Seven of Seth’s books have been bestsellers somewhere around the world, and his blog has been picked as the best business blog by several leading publications. Seth’s head is the most recognizable author icon in business. Yes, his head.

Squidoo’s goal as a platform is to bring the power of recommendation to search. Squidoo’s goal as a co-op is to pay as much money as we can to our lensmasters and to charity. And Squidoo’s goal as a community is to have fun along the way, and meet new ideas and the people behind them.

JobsinStockholm.com reinvents the expat job search

JobsinHubs.com launched on 1 April 2006 in Copenhagen building a community for English-speaking expatriates seeking high-level jobs, targeting an exciting niche market. No longer would one read through an exciting job opportunity in English, only to get to the bottom and learn the position requires the native language.  As an American expatriate who had lived in Brussels, and recently moved to Sweden, I knew first hand how sorely this service was needed.  The site was a success, reaching thousands of interested people in a few months, proving JobsinCopenhagen.com was popular with Danish and other professionals capable of, and wanting to join a company that uses English as the working language.   The founders of JobsinCopenhagen decided to expand to other cities with large expatriate populations including Brussels Stockholm and Rome.   This is where I joined the team seven months later as founder of JobsinStockholm.com.

The JobsinHubs sites are thoughtfully designed to improve job seekers’ online experience by providing them with tools to prepare them for recruitment process.  Our Web 2.0 features enable the user to:

1.      check the background and history of the company on Wikipedia

2.      read the latest blog entries about the company on Technorati

3.      check who on LinkedIN is working in this company and could help you

4.      view a dynamic map where the job is located

5.      bookmark the job ad on Del.ici.ous

6.      find similar jobs

7.      save the jobs in your favorites

8.      subscribe to an RSS feed

The site also acts as a survival kit, providing links to information one needs to get settled in Sweden, making JobsinStockholm.com a one-stop shop for expatriates in Stockholm and the rest of Sweden.  We plan to continue creating useful functionalities to facilitate and improve the job hunt.

Online Networking

If I didn’t believe in it before, I certainly do now.  I am referring to networking.  That old adage, “it’s not what you know, but who you know” rings true as much now as ever.  Take XING for example.  I have met many interesting, dynamic, and funny people by being a member of OpenBC.  The group forums are filled with intelligent conversations around topics that cover everything from Global Business Women to life before, during and after a MBA.  And while I joined the network while living in Belgium I have connected with people in my hometown of Washington, DC, fellow alums in the USA and Europe, businessmen in Africa, as well as women working and thriving across the globe.  In fact, when I moved to Sweden, some members of OpenBC were the first to reach out to me and make me feel welcome (thanks Bendt!).  Don’t underestimate the power of your personal and professional network.  We are all closer to each other than ever before.
