The Newseum has a collection of front page images from 730 newspapers on 5 November 2008:

It is interesting to see how many made Obama’s victory a front page story.

It may be safe to assume that there would have been front page coverage of the election results in as many papers if the outcome would have been different.

What is interesting is the headlines used when reporting on Obama’s victory. I like the headline from one of the papers in Syndey: “Everyone’s a Winner”.

I am surprised that the Fort Worth Star-Telegram decided to open the discussion on race relations…

Confession of a Black Man

By Eddie Griffin

Thursday, March 20, 2008

I am surprised that the Fort Worth Star-Telegram decided to open the discussion on race relations, a subject dealt with in the newspaper, one-sidedly, for so long. Not to mention, the one black editorialist Bob Ray Sanders is constantly roasted in the newspaper as always “playing the race card”.

(See “We Need to Talk”, Thursday, March 20, 2008)

After much discussion in the national media about race, as it relates to the 2008 presidential campaigns, and recent controversies created by surrogates of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, the Star-Telegram announced, “Let the conversation begin” about race and perceived racism.

My first thought was like that of Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men: “You can’t handle the truth!” The theme of most white America is “lie to me” and “make me feel good about myself”. And, if I don’t lie, they call me a “race hater”. I be damned if I do. I be damned if I don’t… speak as an African-American man.

Barack Obama could not have grown up with Eddie Griffin. I would have hounded him as being an Oreo, black on the outside and white on the inside. His thinking, to me, is more white than black. Therefore, he could have had no input in the discussion of black liberation in the 1960s, as black conservatives had no input then. Barack Obama is conservative in the eyes of more militant African-America, just as Bob Ray Sanders is on the right side of Dixie.

No, white America, you can’t handle the truth. You want me to tell you a lie? Here is a lie: I love you white America, unconditionally. My wife doesn’t even get that much commitment from me. And you want me to love you more than myself. Geesh!

Oh, you say I am an old angry black militant from the revolution days of the Civil Rights Movement, and that deep down inside I hate white people. Not so.

There are some things about white people’s practice of brotherly kindness that doesn’t sit well with me. For example: They like to have the last authoritative word on any and every subject, as if my intelligence is inferior. It makes me angry, not hateful. And, the Bible says, “Be angry, but sin not”. I can be angry without punching white people in the noose, a temptation I have suppressed for all of my life, and yet I am not non-violent, in the MLK sense.

Basically, I feel sorry for humanity, because a lot of white people just don’t get it… so sad, the human race. But my saying that I, a black man, feel sorry for them only angers them even more. Why?

Behind the scenes with the Democrats Aroad Obama supporters at the EMEA caucus in Brussels

March 19th, 2008

On Saturday once all of the procedural issues were settled the women delegate candidates, myself included, gave 2 minute prsentations as to why they would be the best female delegate.  It was inmportant to the Obama delegates to implement the DA goald of having a delegation that represented DA abroad:  African, Asian, and Aispanic Americans, member from the LBGT community as well as  white men and women.  Of 4 delegates we were allotted we wanted to send 2 men and 2 women.  So the coalition buildling between countries began.  Who would we support?

After lunch the men gave their presentations and the voting began.  After 2 rounds of votes no one had won and as people left for dinner and more negotiating, we would come back and finish the selection process on Sunday morning.  Little did we know that on Sunday morning we would be thrown a moneky wrench and forced to rethink everything we had learned on Saturday.  Read more about this from a personal angle here.

In the end we elected elegates that represent a diverson section of people and countries.

Finally, someone talks honestely about race in America. Obama keeps it real.

I saw it live in Sweden so I am guessing that Obama’s Speech on Race was shown around the world.

I think the right and Clinton camps are kicking themselves for providing this highly visible platform for Obama to talk about race in a way that no other Presidential candidate ever has.

My father taped the speech and I wager to say it was the most important speech of Obama’s career and the entire Presidential race to date.

Talk about playing the cards you are dealt, and winning!

From Sweden to Brussels to Denver?

March 14th, 2008

obama_delegate_phixr.jpgobama_delegate_phixr.jpg

I am heading to the Democrats Abroad (DA) Europe, Middle East and Africa Regional Caucus today in Brussels.

Among other issues 4 Obama delegates will be chosen who will attend the Democratic National Convention in Denver in August.  Additional delegtes will be chosen at other DA caucuses.

The Obama campaign has approved my application to be a delegate.  Now I have to convince my peers to send me.  Tomorrow I will have between 1-2  minutes to say why I should go to Denver.

Can I go to Denver?  Yes I Can!

Stay tuned.
